It's that time of year again ... Summer is drawing to a close, Fall is around the corner, and it's time to get our archery gear squared away for archery season opens. Whether you are using a compound bow, recurve bow, or a crossbow, having the best bolts, arrows, and of course - broadheads, is critical to a successful hunt.

Technology has come a long way when it comes to choosing your archery broadheads. I'm still impressed and inspired by how mankind provided for themselves with flint rock arrows tied on with string. Now we have fancy titanium fixed blade and mechanical broadheads and the options seem to be limitless.

Mechanical broadheads (also referred to as expanding blade broadheads) are known for the incredible damage inflicted on the target. These broadheads typically are closed or "folded" in and the idea is that they will deploy when released.   The blades deploy into a wider position and can really take down an animal including very lage game such as elk and moose.   Another advantage of using these is the blood trail caused by these is usually more significant, depending on your shot. These do have a tendency to malfunction or deploy accidentally. There is usually additional parts you may need to pay attention to such as little rubber gaskets for the blades to fold into. These get lost easily, worn out, and can be cumbersome to keep up with.

Fixed blade broadheads are exactly as described - they are fixed and permanent. There is not any mechanical requirements here - no deploying, flexing, or opening.   These broadheads can still inflict a fatal wound and bring down the largest of animals with the right shot.
